Better Opportunities - "Nepal Projects grew from our desire to use Menu as a platform for making a positive difference. Many young Nepali women from poor families risk being lured into prostitution. Through education of children and employment of young women we offer a sound and viable alternative. The Nepal Projects is our way to celebrate great craftsmanship, while helping vulnerable workers secure a better future for themselves and their families." - Bjarne Hansen, owner & founder, Menu A/S

  • GRShop & Gabriel Ross Staff Holiday Wish List for 2014: #1

What are you giving - and hoping to receive - this holiday season? The staff at GR Shop and Gabriel Ross are a design savvy bunch who are constantly surrounded by beautiful objects. It is hard to choose one favourite from all the possible pieces but here are their choices for a happy holiday season.

Ross:  For the traveller on your list, it has to be the Alessi 9090 Espresso Maker. I personally always travel with the 6 cup size, as it can make two Americanos in one go by adding 3 espresso shots to each mug with a little boiling water. No one wants to start a day on the road with bad coffee so take one of these very nicely designed, easy to use, espresso makers along for the ride.

The Alessi 9090 Espresso Maker, designed by Richard Sapper in 1980, is available in 3 sizes: 1 cup, 3 cups and 6 cups. A perfect start to a holiday morning. Amber: The Herman Miller Eames Hang It All is my choice.  Great design and super functional, Ray and Charles Eames elevated the everyday coat rack into something inventive and fun. First crafted with multicolored balls and a white wire frame, two new monochromatic options, all-black and all-white, are now available and they expand the sense of play and inventiveness of the original. With young kids around the house, this would be a great gift to receive!

The Herman Miller Eames Hang It All is great for hallways, bathrooms, kid's rooms, anywhere you need to add function and fun. It is available with multi- coloured wooden balls or all-black or all-white balls. Vanessa: Everyone loves eclectic objects and the Vitra Eames House Bird is one of my favourites to add to anyone's collection. The masterfully simplistic black bird (circa 1910) with its tapered beak and sleek tail was evidently one of Ray and Charles Eames' most prized objects of Appalachian folk art. It became famous in the 1950s when it was featured in a poster highlighting some of their chairs.  Vitra used 3-D scans of the original to create the solid alder wood reproduction that is made today in Germany.

The Eames House Bird is made of black lacquered solid alder and has steel wire legs. Add it to your collection! The Vitra Eames House Bird is made of black lacquered solid alder and has steel wire legs. Add it to your collection!

Alexandra: As an avid tea drinker I love the Alessi Michael Graves Electric Kettle, with its bird-shaped whistle. A beautiful classic, it does what it's supposed to do: look good and boil water - quickly! This kettle combines modern design with a bit of whimsy and it will bring some beauty into your everyday life. And the little bird may even make you smile. It is also available in a stove top version. Check it out at: GRShop.com
