  • New from Alessi - timeless Italian design

Alessi, the Italian design company, has been creating amazing products for your home since 1921. Collaborating with starchitects such as Zaha Hadid and internationally recognized designers such as Michael Graves, Philippe Starck and Richard Sapper Alessi has produced some of the absolute best iconic designs in the world. And they are always producing new products to enhance your life. Here are some recent releases.

Alessi Forma Cheese Grater The Alessi Forma Cheese Grater was designed by the Pritzker prize-winning architect, Zaha Hadid. It is the perfect expression of her ability to absorb facets of the visual arts and convert them into objects with fluid and dynamic shapes. It is like a small, sculptural tabletop piece of architecture. The Forma Cheese Grater was designed to mold to the shape of your palm, making it easy and pleasant to hold.

The Alessi Barkvase Flower Vase designed by Michael Boucquillon and Donia Maaoui inspiered by the trees that surround their house in Lucca. The flower vase is produced at the factory in Crusinallo, Omegna, using a cutting and laser perforating process on the steel sheet, which is subsequently shaped and welded. The design of “Barkvase”, as its name suggests, is inspired by tree bark and its perforated pattern recalls knots in the wood grain. The new Giro flatware collection by designer Ben van Berkel riffs off the very successful Alessi Girotondo Collection by the design team King-Kong.

The Alessi Girotondo Fruit bowl The cartoon men created by the King-Kong team are a symbol and icon of mirror polished design based on the use of "affective codes", so much so that they are one of its most oft-cited examples. The "standing men" have appeared on objects from the farthest corners of Alessi tradition, like trays and baskets, and then they multiplied, invaded and conquered other groups of objects - and not just in the kitchen and at the table. The Alessi Raggiante Wall Clock designed by Michele de Lucchi introduces his wall clock, inspired by the sun that illuminates and paces the day. The designer favours natural materials which transform, improve even, over time: for this object, he chose bamboo, giving rise to an industrial product that retains the characteristic features of an item that is a cross between art and handicraft. • Jasper Morrison, "Thingness" at the Tate Modern

This week I am again looking to London, England and an exhibition of Jasper Morrison's design objects and furniture. The exhibition, "Thingness", is on at  Switch House, Tate Modern, London until October 2nd. It is a concise survey of Jasper Morrison’s thought and design process over the past thirty years.

Small but eye-catching. With two round cushions for the backrest and seat and a metal band that links these to the metal frame. On its own or in a group, the Vega is comfortable without being too comfortable. A typical Artifort touch is the round, brightly coloured cushions in every imaginable colour combination. Born in London in 1959, Morrison studied at Kingston Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art, London. Since the late 80s he has collaborated with some of the world’s outstanding producers of furniture and domestic utensils, including Alessi, Vitra, Rosenthal, Artifort and Flos.

Three small friends, robustly built, stable, individual in character and lovable in appearance, that's the Cork Family. It is comparatively light, enormously tough and has a pleasant soft feel. Morrison believes that the role of the designer is not to invent form, but rather to be open to the world around him, adapting objects for new purposes. He is especially interested in those everyday objects that continue to serve their purpose well in a form that has often been created by an anonymous designer. He sees such anonymous objects as a reminder for designers that ‘in the real world an object depends on its long-term usefulness for survival’.

Jasper Morrison has designed many common household objects and utensils for Alessi. Some are so basic such as pots and pans, wine coolers and tableware. These "anonymous objects" are what we use everyday, without thinking of who designed them. Each piece has about them a subtle quality which make them better everyday performers.

ajm100s7 The Alessi Pots & Pans Collection offers stainless steel, mirrored finished pans, pots, frying pans and colanders for those who love to cook and those just beginning the journey to great food experiences.

alessi_polished_kitchen_cutlery_set The Jasper Morrison Alessi Collection of utensils and dinnerware follow the typical minimalist approach that features in all of Jasper Morrison's work. This design reduces the "cutlery-object" to its barest essence, its purest and most customary form, stripped of all stylistic value and - perhaps precisely because of this - is clearly recognizable as Morrison's work.

Jasper Morrison's designs of everyday objects make excellent gifts, and of course, for your own personal use, they are real keepers!  If you have the chance to view the exhibition, and visit the Switch House, London's newest addition to the UK's Tate Galleries, maybe I will see you there!
