Mater

  • Mater, Danish ethical design and expert craftsmanship

Creating classic, timeless and ethical designs is at the heart of the Danish design company Mater. They take pride in a long-standing dedication to high quality materials, simple style and a colour scheme of calm, organic muted tones. Mater is 20% off until March 21st.

The Bowl Table has a top made from the wood of the mango fruit tree. Mango trees is grown and tended, and once the productive life of the tree is over, it is cut down and another one is planted. Incidentally, mango, as a fruit is widely consumed across the country hence the wood is plentiful. It is turned manually on the lathe, showcasing the skill of the “kharaadi” or the wood turning community, thereby supporting local skills. The legs are made of mild steel, machined out of rods. The finishing is done with lead free water based PU lacquers, thereby respecting the local environment. Mater means "mother" in Latin. It is Mater's daily reminder of their contribution to help with the challenges mother earth faces. Design influences how we as humans live our lives; it shapes values, culture and society. Unfortunately, the choices made during the design process often have environmental consequences. However, as a manufacturer, Mater has the opportunity to rethink dubious practices and create ethical and sustainable design that minimizes adverse social and environmental impacts.

The Mater Shell Collection of lounge, dining and bar stools. The Mater Shell Bar Stool is a contemporary and yet very premium bar stool with a leather stitched seat. The craftsmanship involved in making the seat is inspired by traditional craft practices in North India, particularly saddle making. A swivel makes the bar stool suitable for various spaces in both the residential and the commercial settings. Ethics plays a large part in the Mater company ethos. They care about using resources responsibly in their designs and they try hard to implement and motivate sustainable business principles within the production chain. They are aware of the associated environmental, ethical and social consequences of production of design objects. They want to inspire consumer behavior and engage people in sustainable thinking, helping making design matter and reducing their overall footprint.

Janell:  These lovely Mater Bowl Tables strike a perfect balance between contemporary-modern and rustic-industrial chic.  I specifically love the delicate strength and tapered shape of the steel legs and the fact that the bowls themselves are comprised of abundant, sustainably harvested mango tree wood. I hope I have been good - I know I have been if I receive one of these!

The Mater Bowl Table series, designed by Ayush Kasliwal/ IND, is made of Sustainably harvested natural mango wood with steel legs and is available in 4 sizes and 3 stains: Natural, black and sirka grey. Lawrie:  The Herman Miller Noguchi Table for sure! Why? Because it is graceful, organic, sleek and I want one for my home, the walnut base, please! Noguchi felt this table, with its simple elements consisting of one piece of free form glass and two perfectly and delicately balanced pieces of wood, was one of his best achievements. Imitated? Yes. Equaled? Never. Is it art, or is it furniture?

The Herman Miller Noguchi Table, designed in 1948 by Isamu Noguchi, is available in 4 finishes: black, walnut, natural cherry and white ash. Isamu Noguchi's signature appears on the edge of the glass top. Since then, his core principles have informed the development of every light in the studio’s 20-year history.
