  • Millennial pink - the colour that is so now!

So there is a new colour out there that designers are using on everything from fashion to home furnishings. Millennial pink, or Tumblr pink, as it is also known, represents a kind of ironic prettiness, or post-prettiness. It’s sort of a grapefruit shade of apricotty salmon. So let's embrace this timeless, but very now, colour.

Almost no other animal enjoys such popularity as the elephant. Admired for its majestic size and loved for its proverbial good-humour, it is part of our everyday experience as a child’s cuddly toy, a storybook character and a majestic creature. Charles and Ray Eames also succumbed to their charms and in 1945 designed a toy elephant made of plywood. However, it never made it into mass production. The Eames elephant is now available for the first time in a plastic version for those it was originally intended for: children. Whether as a toy (also for outdoor use) or as an item for children’s bedrooms, this friendly-looking animal with its distinctive, huge floppy ears should make the heart of many a child (and parent) beat just that little bit faster. So where did this new pink come from? Some say it was Wes Anderson’s 2014 movie The Grand Budapest Hotel, which embodies a kind of retro-kitsch and is centred on a hotel painted several kinds of pink. Others say it was the "rose gold" iPhone in 2015. Pantone, the international authority on colour and colour systems named Rose Quartz as its colour of the year for 2016.

Vitra embraced Millennial pink in a big way, Vitra embraced Millennial pink in a big way. The Vitra Alcove Collection of sofas, chairs and ottomans  are awash in this craze, plus it goes beautifully with black, grey, white and just about all other colours.

IMG_1109 This grouping of Vitra furnishings was spotted at the Vitra Design Museum recently. Its all very Alice in Wonderland-y!

The Fritz Hansen Drop Chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958, and has now been relaunched. Looking very fresh and vibrant in Millennial pink, but also available in a wide range of highly curated other colours and fabrics! Pink is the most gender-loaded of all colours, interlaced with femininity in everything from toy-store branding to the pink pussy hats of the recent women's marches. This modern pink is complicated. There are even anti-pink campaigns targeting the role of pink-saturated marketing to young girls. But a new generation of culturally aware young people are taking a different approach to the same problem, subverting or reclaiming pink as their own, hence the name Millennial pink.

Sometimes just a hint of pink is enough for a piece to really stand out. The Vitra Kast Modular Storage, designed by Maarten Van Severen, Van Severen paid special attention to the colour for the sliding doors, which not only emphasise Kast’s elegant and yet seemingly classical proportions, but also give it a fresh and optimistic sense. If you find Millennial pink just not quite to your taste you can always go in another direction.

Just imagine that Finn Juhl designed his Pelican Chair in 1940. With graceful curves that befriend the body and wrap the sitter in its embrace, the Pelican is true to Juhl’s idea that “a chair is not just a product of decorative art in a space, it is a form and a space in itself.” Just imagine that Finn Juhl designed his Pelican Chair in 1940. With graceful curves the Pelican is true to Juhl’s idea that “a chair is not just a product of decorative art in a space, it is a form and a space in itself.” The influence of contemporary sculpture is clear and Finn Juhl was a pioneering force in his own country and credited with introducing Danish modern to mid-century America. He certainly seemed to have loved pink, in all its shades.

So if you are confused about what exactly this new pink looks like here is a swatch but I think you can stretch this colour in lots of directions, so let's see where it takes you. The Panton Chair is a classic in the history of furniture design. Conceived by Verner Panton in 1960, the chair was developed for serial production in collaboration with Vitra in 1967. It was the first chair to be manufactured completely out of plastic in one single piece. OK to use outdoors.

Add some funk to pull it all together:

moooi_carpet_n The Moooi Carpet Collection comes in ten rocking patterns and colours. Moooi Corks are stools turned from agglomerate cork. They can be used as a small side table, a stool, or ottoman. The Moooi Rabbit Table Lamp brings a touch of nature in fairytale style and adds genuine madness.

The Moooi Carpet Collection, designed by Marcel Wanders in 2005, is a creative chic way of decorating your floor. Have as much fun with the floor as you have with the walls.

  • grshop.com: The Design Story

We've been settling into our new digs for a few weeks now and are loving every moment of it. Our fresh new look, exciting new products, and glorious white space has offered a whole new life to each and every one of our beautiful designer offerings.

This post is all about our new look and the talent behind it: Ivan Meade from Meade Design Group, a multidisciplinary firm in Victoria BC and long valued client of Gabriel Ross.

    meadedesigngroup.blogspot.ca

Known as "The designers to the designers", Meade Design Group offers both interior and graphic design services so our website project was a perfect marriage of their interior experience and graphic skills. For Ivan, a degree in business was also a strong influence in his work with grshop.com

"Over the years we have been very fortunate to brand and design the logos, collateral materials and websites for a lot of businesses that are part of the design industry. My first degree is in business so I also understand what a business needs and I have a unique advantage in that being in the interior design field I can understand firsthand what a client or colleague’s needs are when shopping online."

    Ivan Meade, Meade Design Group

When designing the new site, Ivan says our products served as inspiration:

"We wanted to create a site that would live up to the well-thought out process and design of the classic and modern pieces sold through GR Shop."

Cite Chair, 1930 by Jean Prouve for Vitra

Keeping in mind our motto "Always Authentic", and maintaining our pre-existing brand recognition as the premier Canadian contemporary furniture e-commerce site were also key elements considered during the design process.

I asked Ivan what the top functional priority of the new design was, and the answer was something that I myself and all e-shoppers crave to see and experience online:

"Navigation – Always Navigation.  For an e-commerce site and any website actually, good and efficient navigation is a must... all of the information, options and key features need to be accessible at any time in a pleasant and friendly manner. The customer needs to have the same experience as they would if they found themselves in the Gabriel Ross showroom."

Ivan is a fellow mid-century modern design enthusiast so I had to know... What is Ivan Meade's favourite piece of MCM?

Barcelona Stool by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe for Knoll

"I love the Barcelona stool – It is a classic and not used as often as its counterpart – the Barcelona Chair. I love the symmetry in the piece."

Meade Design Group is truly an integral part of Victoria's creative community and we are so pleased to have been able to work with them on this project.

What's the next big thing for MGD? A heartfelt awareness campaign for men's health inspired by Ivan's own personal story:

"I started a Testicular Cancer awareness campaign that we hope to launch in October.  As a cancer survivor, I was in shock to learn that men don’t check themselves. Ever... There is very little [awareness] material for Testicular Cancer so I decided to use all the resources at my disposal to bring awareness in my own community."
