For those of you lucky enough to be heading to London, UK before September 26th, like this happy blogger, check out the Ron Arad exhibition at the Ben Brown Gallery in the Mayfair area. The exhibition at Ben Brown Gallery is the culmination of Ron Arad's most recent work, spanning sculpture, hand-crafted studio pieces and industrial design, and showcases the artist's constant experimentation with the boundaries and possibilities of materials, from metals to wood and glass.
GRShop.com offers several of Ron Arad's home furnishings designed for Vitra, Magis and Alessi.
Ron Arad's Voido Rocking Chair for Magis is a statement in movement and ingenuity with materials. Made of rotational-molded polyethylene, it is available in black or white.
Movement is a central theme in Arad's oeuvre. His pieces often encourage interaction, expressed both in his functional designs and purely aesthetic pieces. Drawing inspiration from William Morris's infamous quote "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful", Ron Arad combines cutting-edge techniques with expert craftsmanship.
With its undulating, sculptural form, Ron Arad’s Magis Folly Bench will spark conversations while providing a comfortable place to chat. Molded in nearly indestructible polyethylene for both indoor and outdoor use, the bench’s seat and back surfaces merge seamlessly and encourage lounging any which way.
Educated at the Jerusalem Academy of Art and later at the Architectural Association in London, Ron Arad is an Israeli artist, industrial designer and architect who lives and works in London. He was awarded the 2011 London Design Week Medal for design excellence and became a Royal Academician of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2013.
The elegant plastic shell of the Vitra T-Vac Chair offers comfortable seating not only in interior spaces but also in outdoor settings: special additives in the molded polypropylene shell help to prevent the colour from fading, and the powder-coated finish of the base makes the chair suited for use on the terrace or in the garden. Since the chair can be stacked, it is especially useful in places where large numbers of chairs are required.
Ron Arad teamed up with Magis to make the Raviolo Chair, which is available in a multitude of colours, and offers a continuous looped ribbon with a defined inside and outside texture that serves to make the continuous band more readable, and like stuffed pasta, the ribbon appears to be inflated.
The exhibition at the Ben Brown Gallery includes such pieces as Puddle 21, 2015, a signed and numbered table with a mirror polished stainless steel top. Photo: Ben Brown Gallery, London.
