Chieftain Chair

  • Hail to the Chief!

A showstopper in every way, the Chieftain Chair, designed by Finn Juhl in 1949, is undoubtedly the most iconic and expressive piece from the designer.   A departure from the strict functionalism that dominated Danish furniture at the time, the Chieftain placed form above all, taking cues from art, customs, and weaponry.  In 1949, it was truly modern.

Dubbed "the big chair" by Juhl himself, at a meter wide, this is a piece to be reckoned with.

Today, the Chieftain has been credited as one of the most important exponents of the Danish Modern movement in the US during the 1950s. For this reason, Finn Juhl is often considered to be the Grand Poobah of Danish Modern.  Seventy years later, while the sought-after originals fetch a handsome auction bid, the Chieftain chair is now made-to-order by the House of Finn Juhl, a design collective with exclusive rights to manufacture and produce forty of Juhl's classics.

While some may balk at the hefty price tag on a Chieftain, a chair this exacting and complex takes a considerable amount of labour, highly-skilled craftspeople, and the highest quality materials.  Appreciating the combination of history, art, and craft that the chair represents it is no wonder that to this day it brings an unparalleled presence to any space it inhabits.

Fit for kings and chieftains, but well-suited to anyone who can identify with the mounting pressures of ruling a village...
