The Vitra Grand Sofa (2017) is Antonio Citterio's interpretation of luxurious comfort and contemporary design. The designer's Italian flair for lightness and elegance is united with the trademark quality and precision of Vitra.

New: The Vitra Soft Modular Sofa

With carefully balanced proportions, great comfort and a conscious renunciation of decorative details, the Soft Modular Sofa (2016) by Jasper Morrison unites the characteristics of a modular lounge sofa in its purest form.

The Vitra Soft Modular Sofa configures in so many ways. The Soft Modular Sofa is Jasper Morrison's updated interpretation of what has become a modern classic: the low-slung modular sofa with a decidedly horizontal emphasis. Firmly in line with his philosophy of 'super normal' design, Jasper Morrison has successfully coupled home-like informality with precise finishing and expressive clarity. As it functions like an architectural element, the Soft Modular Sofa can be subtly integrated into any interior. New: The Vitra Pacific Chair

The Vitra Pacific Chair, designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby (2016) followed the guiding principle of "full performance, quiet design". This intuitive office chair offers all the functions necessary for ergonomic seating, while demonstrating expressive clarity and exceptional precision. Thanks to its understated character, the Vitra Pacific Chair is an ideal addition to any contemporary interior.

Although not readily visible, the Pacific Chair offers all the sophisticated functions necessary for ergonomic seating. The height-adjustable back and armrests form part of the same vertically aligned profile. This is a decisive feature of the overall design concept and allows users to sit sideways. The synchronised mechanism automatically responds to the weight of the respective user, offering an immediate sense of personalised comfort. Further fine adjustments can be carried out quickly and easily thanks to the concealed but intuitively positioned operating elements. The padded backrest comes in three different heights. Components are colour-coordinated in light or dark versions, available with matching functional armrests or elegant aluminium arm supports. New: The Vitra ID Chair Collection

The Vitra ID Collection of Chairs, designed by Antonio Citterio (2010 - 2016) offers countless customization options to suit individual users. Different variations of the FlowMotion mechanism, a selection of backrests, armrests, seats and bases, along with a broad array of colours and fabrics, enable every user and company to find the perfect ID Chair – whether for an open-plan setting, individual or team offices, conference areas or management offices.

The Vitra Air Chair The one-piece plastic backrest of the Vitra ID Air Office Chair offers strategically placed perforations in its backrest. ID Air offers great freedom of movement while providing the necessary support for healthy sitting postures. The flexibility of the backrest and the effective air circulation are complemented by soft seat upholstery to ensure a high degree of comfort.

The ID Chair Concept consists of the following basic types: ID Air, ID Mesh, ID Soft, ID Soft L, ID Trim, and ID Trim L , each with different backrests. Despite the many possible variations, it always remains essentially the same chair in look and construction – with benefits for companies in terms of aesthetics, maintenance and service.

With its compact padding, the backrest of the ID Trim office chair conveys a sense of classic elegance and quality craftsmanship. The sandwich construction with integrated lumbar support provides the comfort of an upholstered backrest while being almost as slim as a mesh backrest – offering an alternative to both of these construction types for office chair backrests. • Jasper Morrison, "Thingness" at the Tate Modern

This week I am again looking to London, England and an exhibition of Jasper Morrison's design objects and furniture. The exhibition, "Thingness", is on at  Switch House, Tate Modern, London until October 2nd. It is a concise survey of Jasper Morrison’s thought and design process over the past thirty years.

Small but eye-catching. With two round cushions for the backrest and seat and a metal band that links these to the metal frame. On its own or in a group, the Vega is comfortable without being too comfortable. A typical Artifort touch is the round, brightly coloured cushions in every imaginable colour combination. Born in London in 1959, Morrison studied at Kingston Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art, London. Since the late 80s he has collaborated with some of the world’s outstanding producers of furniture and domestic utensils, including Alessi, Vitra, Rosenthal, Artifort and Flos.

Morrison believes that the role of the designer is not to invent form, but rather to be open to the world around him, adapting objects for new purposes. He is especially interested in those everyday objects that continue to serve their purpose well in a form that has often been created by an anonymous designer. He sees such anonymous objects as a reminder for designers that ‘in the real world an object depends on its long-term usefulness for survival’.

Jasper Morrison has designed many common household objects and utensils for Alessi. Some are so basic such as pots and pans, wine coolers and tableware. These "anonymous objects" are what we use everyday, without thinking of who designed them. Each piece has about them a subtle quality which make them better everyday performers.

ajm100s7 The Alessi Pots & Pans Collection offers stainless steel, mirrored finished pans, pots, frying pans and colanders for those who love to cook and those just beginning the journey to great food experiences.

alessi_polished_kitchen_cutlery_set The Jasper Morrison Alessi Collection of utensils and dinnerware follow the typical minimalist approach that features in all of Jasper Morrison's work. This design reduces the "cutlery-object" to its barest essence, its purest and most customary form, stripped of all stylistic value and - perhaps precisely because of this - is clearly recognizable as Morrison's work.

Jasper Morrison's designs of everyday objects make excellent gifts, and of course, for your own personal use, they are real keepers!  If you have the chance to view the exhibition, and visit the Switch House, London's newest addition to the UK's Tate Galleries, maybe I will see you there!

  • 50 Years of Rosenthal Vases

    photo:

Rosenthal's Studio Line is celebrating 5 decades of innovative contemporary design, and have announced a limited edition collection of vases to commemorate the anniversary. The collection includes only 50 vase examples from over the 50 years of designs by a vast selection of artists, designers and architects. Rosenthal has worked with approximately 1000 creatives, couturiers, and prominent people during it's history, according to their website. On the selection process for the anniversary collection (which I imagine to be a very difficult task) CEO Andrea Vianello has this to say:

"Considering our rich design history over the last
50 years, limiting this collection to 50 vases
was a delightful challenge. Each style we have
included is outstanding on its own, uniting
form and function with the diversity and
innovative flair for which the Studio-Line
    is known"

    Ura

    Format,

Beginning in 1961 with Ura by Tapio Wirkkala and ending with Format, a 2011 design by Christophe de la Fontaine, Rosenthal dug deep into its archives and revived some classics for this special edition. Some other pieces have remained in the collection throughout, since their original design year. The 50 vases, although each representing a distinct era of design, all appear "current" which speaks to the classic and timeless nature of the visionary designers. For instance, Arkadia, 1967 by Hans Theo Baumanncan with its textured surface and organic shape, could easily brunch with the asymmetrical, similarly textured surfaces of Papyrus, 2010 by Vittorio Passaro.

Purchasing one of these vases is a great way to own a piece of design history for a relatively small investment. Granted, some of these vases are in the $900/$1000 range, others start under $100. If you're an admirer of Marcel Wanders, Jasper Morrision, Patricia Urquoila, Aldo Rossi, Ron Arad among many others, here's an opportunity to aquire one of their designs as a treasured home or office accessory.
