Louis Poulsen
Louis Poulsen: PH 5, Artichoke, Panthella, AJ and the Science of Glare-Free Light
Louis Poulsen has produced functional lighting in Denmark since 1874. The company's design direction was set in 1924 by Poul Henningsen, whose PH system was built on one principle: the light source must never be directly visible. Every shade and reflector in the PH family exists to eliminate glare while delivering even, comfortable light. The collection extends to Arne Jacobsen's AJ series (1957), Verner Panton's Panthella (1971), and Oki Sato's NJP task lamps (2015).
GRShop is an authorized Louis Poulsen retailer in Canada, with delivery across the country and select pieces available at our Victoria showroom.
The PH 5 (1958) uses a three-shade system angled to produce 100% glare-free light regardless of bulb type - Henningsen's direct response to the constantly changing shapes of incandescent bulbs. The PH Artichoke (1958) was designed for the Langelinie Pavillonen restaurant in Copenhagen: 72 leaves in 12 concentric rows, each positioned to block direct views of the source from every angle while distributing light evenly. The PH Louvre applies the same anti-glare logic to a spherical form. The PH Snowball filters light through layered reflectors for the same soft, glareless quality.
The AJ floor, table, and wall lamps were designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, following the hotel's precise geometric design language. Verner Panton's Panthella table lamp (1971) has remained in production with its original mushroom silhouette unchanged. Oki Sato's NJP series (2015) reduces the classic architect lamp to its essential form. GamFratesi's Yuh floor and table lamps and the VL 45 Radiohus Pendant, designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen for the Danish Broadcasting House in the 1930s, complete a range that spans residential, commercial, and outdoor use.
