Profile: The Carl Hansen CH24 Wishbone Chair

The Carl Hansen CH24 Wishbone Chair is perhaps Hans J. Wegner's most celebrated work. A light, attractive and comfortable dining chair with its characteristic Y-shaped back. The chair is a triumph of craftsmanship, with a simple design and clean lines. Despite the chair's straightforward appearance it takes more than 100 steps to make one.

The hand-woven seat consists of more than 120 meters of paper cord. Wegner designed the Wishbone Chair for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949 and it has been in continuous production since 1950.

The son of a shoemaker, Wegner trained as a cabinetmaker before he began his career as an architect. Wegner started his own design office, and his work soon caught the eye of the folks at Carl Hansen & Søn. The light, sculptural Wishbone Chair was a challenging chair to make, as the steam-bent solid wood frame demands perfect craftsmanship and an intimate knowledge of wood joinery. Even today, the seat is still hand woven from paper cord, a durable material developed during WWII as a substitute for jute. Using the best natural materials, the sculptural Wishbone is made to last for generations and offers outstanding sitting comfort.

Furniture from Carl Hansen & Søn is designed and produced to last for generations. Materials are used carefully, based on several important criteria: strength and durability, lasting beauty, sustainability, and architect or designer input.
