Knoll Sapper™ XYZ Monitor Arm
Richard Sapper’s diverse training in philosophy, anatomy, business, and engineering at the University of Munich has shaped his successful design career ― one which has been dedicated to finding simple, efficient solutions to technically complex problems. His expansive portfolio includes electronics, bicycles, cars, lighting, cookware, and furniture, all of which encompass his ability to synergize art and engineering to deliver thoughtful solutions in handsome packages. Born in Germany but based in Milan, Sapper accents German efficiency with hints of Italian flare.
In 1962, Sapper collaborated with Marro Zanuso to create the Lambda Chair for Gavina SpA (later acquired by Knoll), a piece that is now in the Knoll Museum Collection. In 1979, he worked directly for Knoll, creating the Sapper Office Chair series, a design with enduring appeal and brilliant utility. His most recent collaboration with Knoll resulted in the Sapper Monitor Arm collection in 2009. Both Knoll designs, engineered to perfection, exemplify his ability to reduce an object to its most fundamental elements and style it with his signature elegance.
Sapper is the recipient of 10 Compasso d’Oro prizes, Italy’s most prestigious industrial design award, and more than fifteen of his product designs are in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, including the Lambda Chair and the Sapper Monitor Arm. His most notable products are the Tizio lamp (Artemide) and the IBM Thinkpad. Additionally, he has designed for Fiat, Allessi, and Gavina.
Sapper XYZ moves beyond the traditional X and Y axis range of motion, offering fluid 3D movement on multiple axes. The inventive design features one-touch adjustability to offer an exceptionally responsive experience.

Richard Sapper
Germany, 1932
Born in Germany but based in Milan, Richard Sapper creates innovative products by mining the knowledge of far-flung disciplines. One of the few industrial designers never to have attended a school of design or architecture, Sapper studied philosophy, anatomy, engineering and economics. Sapper began his design career working in the styling department of Mercedes-Benz. In 1958 he went to Italy, where he worked with such luminaries as Gio Ponte, Marco Zanuso, and Gae Aulenti. In 1981, Sapper became a corporate design consultant for IBM, for whom he produced a multitude of instantly recognizable designs such as the ThinkPad notebook computer.
A ten-time winner of the Compasso d’Oro, he created the iconic Sapper Kettle for Alessi and the incredibly successful Tizio table lamp for Artemide in 1972. Called a ‘designer's dream,’ this revolutionary table lamp has a sleek, narrow body, adjustable counterbalanced arms and head and swivels smoothly in four directions. In 1972, the use of the lamp’s arms to conduct electricity was a never-before-seen feature, a true innovation representative of Sapper’s work. In over 50 years he has designed more than 200 products and is an impressively versatile designer who can create compelling visual images for sophisticated electronic technology.

Knoll has lived their guiding principle, "good design is good business," since 1938. Products are all created to inspire, fit, and last. The Bauhaus philosophy that furniture should complement, not compete with architecture, is central to Knoll’s design. Its extensive portfolio includes office work systems, residential mid-century modern classics, textiles, and accessories.
Designers like Harry Bertoia, Eero Saarinen, Warren Platner, Isamu Noguchi, and Florence Knoll contributed to Knoll’s iconic designs. Knoll invests in research and field studies and explores organizational behavior and technology to ensure quality excellence. As a leader in sustainability, Knoll’s practices reduce waste and conserve resources. Based in Pennsylvania, Knoll has a strong international presence, and 40 products are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
