Gifts that stay
Kristian Vedel's oak bird, the Eames House Bird and Oiva Toikka's glass birds. Each Toikka bird is mouth-blown, so no two are quite alike.

Design Gifts and Collectibles for the Holidays
The best design gifts start collections. One Toikka bird turns into three by the next Christmas, and an Eames House Bird rarely stays alone on a shelf for long.
Birds by Toikka
Oiva Toikka designed his first glass birds in 1972. Each bird is mouth-blown, and the small differences in colour and shape give every one its own character. Start with the Little Tern in cranberry, the Ruby Bird or the Mediator Dove, or go big with the Whooper Swan.
Wooden birds
Kristian Vedel's Bird for Architectmade has a head that turns and tilts, so it looks curious, happy or sad depending on where you leave it. Charles and Ray Eames kept a black folk-art bird in their living room for more than 50 years, and Vitra's Eames House Bird follows it in lacquered solid alder. L'Oiseau, by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec in 2011, is the quiet one of the three.
Vases, gift sets and stocking stuffers
Alvar Aalto's vase dates from 1936, and Iittala still mouth-blows it. Muuto's Silent vase is by Andreas Engesvik, and Earnest Studio's Kink vase is porcelain with two openings. Alessi's gift sets come ready to give: the coffee set includes Michele De Lucchi's Pulcina espresso maker, with more sets for tea, pasta, cheese and ice cream. Sarah Archer's book Midcentury Christmas fits in a stocking.
