Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, France's design duo
Brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec (France, b. 1971, 1976), took the design world by a storm with their first joint projects in the late 1990s and have continued to produce exceptional designs ever since, many of which have already become icons in international museums.
Shapes from the world of vegetation serve as inspiration for Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec's Vegetal Chair, designed for Vitra in 2008. Vegetal is available in six colours, is suitable for indoor or outdoor applications and can be stacked up to three chairs high, which permits flexible use in a variety of settings and in large numbers.
A 2002 meeting with Vitra’s Rolf Fehlbaum was the beginning of a special partnership that has borne fruit in numerous projects, including Algues, the Alcove Sofa, the Worknest, and the Slow Chair.
Designed in 2004 for Vitra, Algues are both interior design components and decorative elements. Reminiscent of plants, the plastic elements can be linked together to form web-like textures - from light curtains to opaque, thick room dividers. Available in 7 colours, 25 pieces per pack.
Since 2004, the Bouroullecs have also been working with Magis, for whom they have designed two complete furniture collections, including the Steelwood Collection. The Steelwood pieces combine the warmth of wood with the strength of steel and include chairs, tables and shelving units. A versatile design that fits well in both casual and elegant spaces and everywhere in between.
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, describe the Magis Steelwood Chair as "stable and democratic, universal and long-lasting." A very good dining chair for both small dinette spaces and luxurious dining rooms. Available in various finish options including red, white and black.
The Bouroullec brothers continue their study of simplicity and elegance with their Losanges Rug Collection for Nanimarquina. It’s about reinterpreting the traditional Persian rug using the ancient kilim technique.
Technically complex, the Losanges Collection requires great skill as it involves combining 13 colours through the geometrical rhombus shape, a great challenge for the craftsmen of Northern Pakistan. As well as being crafted by hand, the Afghan wool is also spun by hand, which allows for some unique colour tones to be highlighted which make each rhombus different and each rug a unique item. Two colour options.
Today Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec design for numerous manufacturers, including Vitra, Magis, Alessi, Mattiazzi, and more recently, Flos and Iittala.
The Flos Aim Suspension Lamp is design stripped to its most basic—and beautiful—essence. A modern pendant light that is constructed from a varnished aluminum sheet with a photo-etched optical polycarbonate shade. The cable can be adjusted to allow the fixture head and light distribution to be aimed. The cable has a total length of 29 ft 5 inches (9m) allowing the lamp to be suspended up to 9 ft 8 inches (3m) from the ceiling. Available in black or white.
Each Iittala Ruutu Vase is unique - mouth-blown into a steel mold and polished by hand. The difficult shapes and intensive colours of the Ruutu Vases require seven craftsmen to blow one vase. The fluidity of mouth-blown glass and the vibrant quality of the flat surfaces create an elegant combination with the geometric shape.
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec work together as joint partners in their Paris-based design studio. Their work ranges from small utilitarian objects to architectural projects. In addition to the design of domestic and office furniture, vases, porcelain dishware, jewellery and diverse home accessories, a primary focus of their work is the design and organisation of interior space.
