Shellspotting: the Eames Shell Chair
Celebrate over 65 years of the Eames Shell Chair! Arguably one of the 20th century’s most beloved designs, the Eames Shell Chair has wormed its way into our collective consciousness to become both a coveted piece of design history and, a beautiful, accessible design that is exemplary of the Eames’ desire to make "the best for the most for the least."

Borne out of Charles’ early investigations into molding plywood at Cranbrook Academy with Eero Saarinen in the late ’40s, and continued with Ray and the Eames Office in Venice, California, the Shell Chair was designed on the principle of adaptability, so that it could fit every body and any context—a chair that would be equally at home in a museum, living room, or the laundromat around the corner.

In 2013, again working with the Eames Family, Herman Miller realized Charles and Ray’s vision for the shell chair design in a new and quite appropriate material—molded wood, thanks to advancements in the 3D veneer technology.
The Eames Molded Wood Side Chair is the result of a process that gives wood veneer the extra flexibility it needs to be molded into the complex curves to create a single-form wood shell. Available in four wood finishes, three base finishes and three base options.
Herman Miller recently reintroduced the Eames Shell Chair in a sustainable reformulated, GREENGUARD Gold Certified molded fiberglass, that is available with or without upholstery.
The Eames Molded Fiberglass Side Chair is available in a spectrum of archival colors as well as numerous upholstery and base options, making it an ideal dining chair option for both formal and informal spaces alike.
