The Shell Chair was originally designed in fiberglass but was suspended by Herman Miller and Ray Eames in the 80's due to the material's negative environmental impact and non-recyclable nature. The chair was then introduced in plastic in 2000. Thanks to modern technology and Herman Miller's relentless commitment to the highest environmental standards, they have found a way to bring it back - VOC free! Hooray again!

Why are people so very happy about this material making a comeback? Quite simply... it's beautiful. There are a lot of other reasons why the fiberglass is so well loved. Charles and Ray Eames wanted to make products that were made of industrial, common materials and marry them with immaculate design... and this chair is a fabulous example of that goal achieved to the fullest.
