Emeco Navy Chair: History, Design & Why It Lasts

The Emeco Navy Chair, officially the 1006, is an aluminum side chair made by Emeco in Hanover, Pennsylvania since 1944. Emeco built it for the US Navy during World War II, for use on submarines and battleships, and the requirements were strict: lightweight enough to move easily, strong enough to survive rough conditions at sea, resistant to corrosion, and non-sparking near fuel and munitions.
