KnollStudio Classics bring together the defining furniture of the mid-twentieth century, produced under licensing agreements Knoll has held since the 1940s and 1950s. The collection spans seating, tables, and storage by Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Warren Platner, Isamu Noguchi, and Florence Knoll.
The Barcelona Chair and Stool were designed by Mies van der Rohe for the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exhibition in Barcelona, intended as seating for the King and Queen of Spain. The crisscross stainless steel frame is assembled by hand. The Saarinen Tulip pedestal table replaced the conventional four-leg base with a single cast aluminium pedestal. The Bertoia Diamond Chair, introduced in 1952, used welded steel wire to produce furniture that functions as sculpture. The Platner collection required each chair to be assembled from over one hundred steel rods and more than a thousand individual welds.
Several of these designers were directly connected. Saarinen, Bertoia, Charles Eames, and Florence Knoll all studied or worked at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan during the 1930s and 1940s. Florence Knoll also studied under Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and Warren Platner worked in Saarinen's architecture office before developing the Platner collection. Those relationships shaped the mid-century furniture canon that KnollStudio continues to produce.
