Just as Harry Bertoia's wire furniture lives on both sides of the line between furniture and art, Maya Lin enjoys the same dual purpose with her Stones collection - introduced in 1998 in celebration of Knoll's 60th anniversary.

The famed architect, Lin, wanted to create a piece of furniture that wasn't inspired by western ideas of what a chair or a table should look like. She was instead inspired by pre-Columbian art, Chinese porcelain pillows, and the rolling hills of Ohio where she grew up.

"It goes back to a childhood fascination we all have—that moment when you discover that the earth is round…and you walk around trying to see that curve." - Maya Lin, designer bio - source: knoll.com

Subtlety is a common thread throughout Maya Lin's work and that certainly is true her Stones collection. Simplistic, yet sophisticated shapes make up the colourful collection of chairs that double as side tables and a coffee table that could easily double as a low bench.
