Featured Brand: Tom Dixon, part 2

Last week we featured Tom Dixon, the company. Today we introduce the designer himself, some iconic designs, his latest ECLECTIC collection and a very cool collaboration happening at this year's ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) in New York City this month.

                                           Tom Dixon

One of Tom Dixon's earliest designs, The S Chair, was an example of Dixon's early works after learning to weld out of necessity. With no formal design training, he began building one-off welded chairs with recycled materials which he sold until his workshop became a design studio and office. The S Chair was first produced by Cappellini in 1989 and is now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

One of the most recognizable Tom Dixon designs can be used as a floor light, but looks more like sculpture... put 3 or 4 them together and they become larger than life. "Jack" was launched in 1994 and was mass produced in the UK using rotary moulding. Utilizing industrial processes is a recurring theme in Dixon's work including EPS polystyrene and the pressed glass processes usually used to build car head lamps and glass insulators. Jack is multifunctional - often described as ‘sitting, stacking, lighting thing’.

Last year  Tom Dixon launched ECLECTIC - a collection of everyday objects made of honest and accessible materials including wood, copper, cast iron and marble. The collection is made up intriguing smalls including a piggy bank, door stop, decorative bowls, candles and even a mini Jack.
