Description
The PH 3½-3 Pale Rose Brass Pendant aligns well with nowadays, where discreet but clear lighting with a cosy ambience is often preferred. Henningsen also had a soft spot for the pale rose tint and how it could diversify the appearance of a lamp and its light. At around the same time, he created a particularly delicate variant of his seven-shade glass crown Septima, named the Rosa Septima. Three decades later, he used the same faint rosy hue on the inner sides of the beautiful copper shades of the iconic PH Artichoke. Today, the dimensions of the PH 3½-3 Pale Rose Brass Pendant gives it an almost universal fit, which makes it very versatile and suitable for almost any spot in need of a stylish touch together with an even distribution of very fine light. The soft curves and unique silhouette of the three-shade lamp combined with the pale rose color, the clear edges and a white textile cord make the lamp stand out. While very distinctive looking on its own, it is even more impressive when in a row, even when unlit, where the glossy surface of the delicate mouth-blown Italian glass mirrors its surroundings. Just like in around 1930, the pendant comes with a beautiful brass suspension that will patinate over time, giving the pendant further character. To maintain the original brass finish, however, it may be polished carefully from time to time.

Designer
Poul Henningsen
Denmark, 1894 - 1967
“All political art is bad – all good art is political.” - Poul Henningsen
Poul Henningsen was a Danish author, architect and critic, one of the leading figures of the cultural life of Denmark between the World Wars. In Denmark, he is often referred to as PH. Poul Henningsen was the illegitimate son of author Agnes Henningsen and satirist Carl Ewald. He spent a happy childhood in a tolerant and modern home in Ordrup which was often visited by the leading literates. Between 1911 and 1917 he was educated as an architect, but he never graduated and tried himself as an inventor and painter.
His most valuable contribution to design was in the field of lighting. He designed the PH-lamp in 1925, which, like his later designs, used carefully analyzed reflecting and baffling of the light rays from the bulb to achieve glare-free and uniform illumination. His light fixtures were manufactured by Louis Poulsen. His best-known models are the PH Artichoke and PH 5. The lamps created the economic foundation of his later work.
Other notable designs include the PH Grand Piano which is included in several notable 20th-century design collections, including that of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. He also designed Glassalen for Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen.
Brand
Louis Poulsen: PH 5, Artichoke, Panthella, AJ and the Science of Glare-Free Light
Louis Poulsen has produced functional lighting in Denmark since 1874. The company's design direction was set in 1924 by Poul Henningsen, whose PH system was built on one principle: the light source must never be directly visible. Every shade and reflector in the PH family exists to eliminate glare while delivering even, comfortable light. The collection extends to Arne Jacobsen's AJ series (1957), Verner Panton's Panthella (1971), and Oki Sato's NJP task lamps (2015).
